Frequently asked questions

Did the federal e-bike tax credit pass?

No. No federal e-bike tax credit is in force in 2026. The E-BIKE Act, which would have created one, never became law. A 2026 bill, the America Bikes Act (H.R. 9041), would only add e-bikes to the employer bike-commuting benefit, and it is not law. Every program on this page is run by a state, city, county or utility.

Can I use an e-bike rebate on a bike bought from Amazon?

Usually not. Most programs pay through participating local shops (a discount at the till or a voucher redeemed in person). Each program above says whether online purchases qualify. If yours does not, buy from a listed shop to keep the rebate.

Can I get a free e-bike from the government?

Not from the federal government. The closest thing is an income-qualified state or city program, which can cover most of the price of a basic e-bike. Look for the income-qualified tier on each program card, and note that many of these run as a lottery with short application windows.

Which e-bikes qualify for a rebate?

Most programs require a new Class 1, 2 or 3 e-bike with a motor of 750 W or less, and several now require a UL 2849 (or UL 2271 battery) certificate. Check the program card for its exact list before you buy.

Do I have to qualify on income?

Many programs pay everyone a standard amount and pay income-qualified households more. Some (often city programs) are income-qualified only. The amount tiers are listed on each card.

What if the application window is closed?

Many programs open in short windows or run a lottery, then close when funds run out. The status on each card shows whether it is open, on a waitlist, upcoming or closed, and the date it was last checked.

How often is this list updated?

We re-check every program against its official page at least monthly. A program we have not re-checked for 45 days is marked "status unverified" until we do.
