The method
How we build these tools
A calculator is only worth what its inputs are worth, so all four of these are things you can check rather than things you have to take on trust.
Sourced, never invented
Every constant comes from a named public dataset: EPA fuel-economy averages, EIA and Ofgem energy prices, Bosch e-MTB consumption tables, and the PeopleForBikes state-law tracker.
No black box
The formula is printed on the tool itself. Open the "How it works" panel on any calculator and you see the exact constants and ratios that produced your number.
Dated, so you can check it
Each tool shows when its data was last reviewed, so you can verify it against current law, fuel prices or grid intensity rather than trusting a figure with no age on it.
Reproducible by URL
