Prices are subject to change, and the buy links always fetch the live price. Claimed range is the maker’s figure; our estimate divides the battery by the energy a 175 to 180 lb rider uses at full speed in published range tests, so lighter riders and slower speeds go further. “Seller states it” means the Amazon listing or the maker’s own site claims UL 2272 and we could not verify it in the certifier’s directory. “Not stated” means neither the listing nor the maker gives a figure.

Our method in brief

We started from Amazon's Electric Scooters category on October 18, 2026 and kept only scooters built for children whose maker states an age range and a rider weight limit (for the Gotrax GKS Mini, the Gotrax listing states them, because the model is not on gotrax.com). Every pick had to carry a UL 2272 claim from its maker or its listing, and a hand or electronic brake rather than a foot brake alone. We read each maker's spec sheet, printed every place the Amazon listing disagrees with it, searched CPSC recalls for every model on October 18, 2026, and placed each pick by the maker's own age range. We could not verify any UL 2272 claim in a certifier's directory, and each entry says so. We have not ridden or tested these scooters. Amazon prices move often, so the buy buttons always fetch the live price.

1. Segway Ninebot C2: best for ages 6 to 10, with the C2 Pro for 9 and up

The Segway Ninebot C2 Lite is the best electric scooter for most kids aged 6 to 10, because Segway publishes every limit a parent needs: ages 6 to 10, riders 3 ft 8 in to 4 ft 8 in tall, a 110 lb maximum, and a top speed of 9.9 mph in Sport mode or 7.5 mph in Standard. It stops with a rear drum brake on a hand lever, rolls on 7-inch solid tires, weighs 17.2 lb and carries an IPX4 water rating. Per the Amazon listing, the throttle only works after a 3 mph kick-push. Segway claims 5.6 miles at 9.9 mph and 8.7 miles at 7.5 mph, measured with a 66 lb load at about 77°F, or about 70 minutes of riding. The family sat #6 in Amazon's Electric Scooters in October 2026, the highest-placed kids' scooter in the category.

The C2 Pro is the step up for ages 9 and up. Segway rates it for riders 3 ft 8 in to 5 ft 6 in and up to 132 lb, at 12.4 mph from a 150 W nominal (260 W max) motor and a 108 Wh battery, against the C2 Lite's 120 W (130 W max) and 56 Wh. It folds in one step, has three handlebar heights (34.8, 37.8 and 40.7 in), a Bluetooth speaker and lights that follow the music or the speed, and weighs 23.6 lb by Segway's spec table (23.1 lb in its feature copy). Segway sets no upper age; the Amazon listing gives a maximum age of 13. Segway claims 9.3 miles with a 132 lb load at 70% of top speed. Amazon sells the C2 Lite, C2 Pro and C2 Go in one listing family, so check which option is selected before you buy: the price above is the C2 Lite's, and the C2 Pro costs more.

Segway states its scooters are tested to UL 2272 by TÜV Rheinland; we could not verify it in a certifier's directory. Both Amazon titles also add UL 2271, which Segway's own pages do not claim. No CPSC recall found for the Segway Ninebot C2 as of October 2026; the 2025 Segway recall covered the adult Max G30P and G30LP, not the C2. Segway's C2 Lite page gives a 2-year limited warranty.

Who it suits: a first electric scooter for a child of 6 to 10, or a 9 to 12 year old under 132 lb on the C2 Pro. Skip if: it has to fold into a small trunk and you are buying the C2 Lite, which has no folding mechanism, no bell and no rear brake light.

2. Hiboy Q2 Lite: best for ages 5 to 8, with a seat

The Hiboy Q2 Lite is the pick for the youngest riders and the only scooter on this page with a seat: Hiboy rates it for ages 5 to 8 and riders up to 110 lb, with three speed modes of 3, 6 and 9 mph. The Amazon listing disagrees on several numbers. It says ages 4 to 10, modes of 4, 6 and 9.3 mph, and a 4-hour charge where Hiboy says 3 hours; we go by Hiboy. The rest of the sheet: a 100 W rated motor, a 56.16 Wh battery, a claimed 5 miles, 8.5-inch puncture-resistant tires (the listing calls them solid rubber), electronic plus drum braking, a 5% climb rating, IPX4, a headlight, a deck light and a rear brake light, a soft seat and a toy basket, and a 1-year warranty. It sat #28 in Amazon's Electric Scooters in October 2026.

The listing states UL 2272 and names UL LLC as the testing lab; we could not verify it in the certifier's directory, and Hiboy's own Q2 Lite page does not state it beyond a site-wide badge. No CPSC recall found for the Hiboy Q2 Lite as of October 2026. Some states treat seated scooters differently from stand-up ones: New Jersey's legal e-scooter category, for example, covers stand-up models only.

Who it suits: a 5 to 8 year old who is not yet steady standing on a deck, and parents who want a 3 mph mode to start in. Skip if: your child is already 8 or will be soon, or has to carry it: at 25.79 lb it is the heaviest of the four picks.

3. Gotrax GKS Mini: best budget pick for ages 6 to 12

The Gotrax GKS Mini was the cheapest of our four picks at our October 18, 2026 check and is the slowest scooter on this page: 7.5 mph from a 150 W motor, for ages 6 to 12 and riders up to 120 lb, per the Gotrax listing on Amazon. It weighs 16.3 lb, rolls on 6-inch solid tires, claims 3.75 miles a charge and takes 6 hours to charge. The motor engages after a kick-start; the listing gives about 1.87 mph in one bullet and 1.5 mph in another. It sat #20 in Amazon's Electric Scooters in October 2026.

The trade is documentation. The GKS Mini is not on gotrax.com (only a spare console carries its name there), Amazon names Zhejiang TaoTao Vehicles as the manufacturer, and the listing gives no battery size at all, so every figure in this entry comes from the listing. It stops with an electronic brake and a rear foot (fender) brake, with no hand-lever mechanical brake. The listing states UL 2272, with no lab named; we could not verify it in the certifier's directory. No CPSC recall found for the Gotrax GKS Mini as of October 2026. Gotrax gives a 1-year limited warranty.

Who it suits: a 6 to 9 year old on a budget, where the low top speed matters more than range. Skip if: you want a hand brake on a lever, a stated battery size, or more than about 4 miles of riding.

4. Gyroor H40: best for older kids, ages 8 to 14

The Gyroor H40 is the pick for older and taller kids: Gyroor rates it for ages 8 to 14, riders 4 ft 2 in to 5 ft 3 in, and up to 143 lb, at 10 mph from a 180 W motor. Amazon's listing says ages 6 to 12; we go by Gyroor. Its battery is 21.6 V by 2.6 Ah (56.16 Wh), and Gyroor gives a run time of 40 to 60 minutes rather than a distance; neither the maker nor the listing publishes one. It charges in 2 hours and stops with an electronic thumb brake plus a rear foot brake on the fender. It sat #41 in Amazon's Electric Scooters in October 2026.

Read three figures with care. Gyroor lists the weight as 9.3 lb, which is light for a scooter on 7-inch wheels, and Amazon gives no weight. Its spec table says 143 lb maximum while a feature tile says 80 kg (176 lb), so plan on 143. And Gyroor's second store lists a 42 V charger under the H40 name beside 25.2 V chargers; a 42 V charger does not match the H40's 21.6 V battery, so replace a charger only by the voltage printed on the original. The listing states UL 2272; we could not verify it in the certifier's directory, and Gyroor's own page mentions it only in an image description. No CPSC recall found for the Gyroor H40 as of October 2026; Gyroor's recall page lists only its C3 e-bike (2022). The warranty is 1 year on mechanical parts and 6 months on the battery.

Who it suits: a 10 to 13 year old who has outgrown a 110 lb limit but is not ready for a teen or adult scooter. Skip if: you want a hand-lever brake or a published range figure.

What age is right for a kids' electric scooter?

The right age is the maker's age range, together with its height and weight limits. Our four picks cover ages 5 to 14 between them: Hiboy Q2 Lite 5 to 8, Segway C2 Lite 6 to 10, Gotrax GKS Mini 6 to 12, Gyroor H40 8 to 14, and the Segway C2 Pro from 9 with no upper age. Amazon's own age fields disagree with the maker on three of them, so read the maker's figure before the listing's.

If the scooter is a gift, check where the child will be next year as well as now. An 8 year old has two more years inside the C2 Lite's range and six inside the Gyroor H40's. Weight decides the rest: a child at 110 lb is at the limit of the C2 Lite and the Q2 Lite, while the C2 Pro (132 lb) and the H40 (143 lb) leave room.

How fast and how far do kids' electric scooters go?

Our picks top out at 7.5 to 12.4 mph: the Gotrax GKS Mini 7.5 mph, the Hiboy Q2 Lite 9 mph, the Segway C2 Lite 9.9 mph, the Gyroor H40 10 mph and the Segway C2 Pro 12.4 mph. Every one is below California's 15 mph limit for motorized scooters (Vehicle Code §22411), and well below New York's 20 mph e-scooter line (VTL §114-e). Two of them start slower: the Q2 Lite has a 3 mph mode and the C2 Lite a 7.5 mph Standard mode.

For distance, use the maker's figure and its test conditions. Segway claims 5.6 miles for the C2 Lite at 9.9 mph (8.7 miles at 7.5 mph) with a 66 lb load, and 9.3 miles for the C2 Pro with a 132 lb load at 70% of top speed. Hiboy claims 5 miles for the Q2 Lite, Gotrax 3.75 miles for the GKS Mini, and Gyroor gives 40 to 60 minutes for the H40. Our usual range estimate is built from tests with 175 to 180 lb adult riders, so it does not fit a child, and we give none for kids' scooters. The comparison table on this page shows the maker's claimed range instead: 8.7 miles for the Segway C2 (the C2 Lite in Standard mode) and 3.75 miles for the Gotrax GKS Mini.

Does a child need a helmet on an electric scooter?

Yes, on every ride. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that e-scooters sent 79,300 people to emergency rooms in 2024, and of the injured riders it followed up, only 18% were wearing a helmet (CPSC report, April 2026). California requires a helmet for motorized scooter riders under 18 (Vehicle Code §21235). Buy a helmet sized to the child's head rather than one they will grow into, and have them buckle it before they step on the deck. Our electric scooter safety guide covers the rest.

How much supervision does a kids' electric scooter need?

Plan on an adult close by until the child can start, brake and steer without thinking about it. Start in the slowest mode: 3 mph on the Hiboy Q2 Lite, 7.5 mph Standard on the Segway C2 Lite. The Segway C2 and the Gotrax GKS Mini are kick-to-start, so the throttle does nothing until the rider has pushed off (3 mph on the Segway, about 1.5 to 1.87 mph on the Gotrax per its listing). Practice braking on a flat, open surface away from traffic before the first real ride, because the picks brake differently: the Segway C2 uses a hand-lever drum brake, the Hiboy pairs an electronic brake with a drum, and the Gotrax and Gyroor pair an electronic brake with a foot brake on the rear fender. Check the brakes and any folding latch before each ride.

How should you charge a kids' electric scooter?

Let an adult do the charging, with the charger that came in the box. Charge times from the spec sheets: Gyroor H40 2 hours, Hiboy Q2 Lite 3 hours (the listing says 4), Segway C2 Pro 4 hours, Segway C2 Lite 5.5 hours (an Amazon bullet says 5), Gotrax GKS Mini 6 hours. Charge on a hard floor where you can see it, away from doors and exits, and unplug it when it is full. If you ever need a replacement charger, match the voltage printed on the original: Gyroor's second store lists a 42 V charger under the H40 name, and the H40's battery is 21.6 V. The safety guide explains what UL 2272 covers and how to search CPSC recalls.

Where can kids ride an electric scooter?

Check your state and city rules before a child rides on a street, sidewalk or path. State e-scooter laws were mostly written with adult riders in mind: the National Conference of State Legislatures counted 15 states that set a minimum age for e-scooter riders in its September 2024 summary, most of them at 16. California requires a driver's license or instruction permit to ride a motorized scooter (Vehicle Code §21235), and Pennsylvania does not allow e-scooters on public roads at all. Electric scooters are not e-bikes, so the US e-bike classes do not apply to them.

Two popular kids' scooters we left out

The SIMATE S5 (#18 in Amazon's Electric Scooters on October 18, 2026) and the LINGTENG E8 (#23) both sell well, and neither listing states UL 2272, the electrical and fire safety standard for scooters. New York City has required UL 2272 for e-scooters sold there since September 2023 (Local Law 39), and California has required UL 2272 battery testing for motorized scooters sold there since January 2026 (SB 1271). The LINGTENG E8 also describes only a rear foot brake, with no hand or electronic brake. SIMATE sells a different kids' model whose listing does claim UL 2272; this note is about the S5.

How we chose

We started from Amazon's Electric Scooters category on October 18, 2026 and kept the scooters built for children, then screened each one on four checks: a maker-stated age range and weight limit, a UL 2272 claim on the listing or the maker's site, a hand or electronic brake, and no CPSC recall (searched October 18, 2026). We read every maker's spec sheet, recorded where the Amazon listing disagrees, and placed the picks by the maker's age range. We could not verify any UL 2272 claim in a certifier's directory, and each entry says so. We have not ridden or tested these scooters.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best electric scooter for kids?

The Segway Ninebot C2 Lite at $179.99 (as of Oct 22, 11:10 AM EDT, subject to change), for most kids aged 6 to 10. Segway rates it for riders 3 ft 8 in to 4 ft 8 in and up to 110 lb, caps it at 9.9 mph, and fits a hand-lever rear drum brake and a 2-year warranty. Segway states its scooters are tested to UL 2272 by TÜV Rheinland; we could not verify it in a certifier's directory. For a child of 9 or older, the C2 Pro raises the limits to 132 lb and 12.4 mph. For ages 5 to 8, the Hiboy Q2 Lite adds a seat and a 3 mph mode.

What age is an electric scooter for?

Whatever age its maker states, and the ranges differ more than most parents expect. Among our picks, Hiboy rates the Q2 Lite for 5 to 8, Segway the C2 Lite for 6 to 10 and the C2 Pro for 9 and up, the Gotrax listing puts the GKS Mini at 6 to 12, and Gyroor rates the H40 for 8 to 14. Amazon's age fields disagree on three of them (Q2 Lite 4 to 10, H40 6 to 12, C2 Pro up to 13), so go by the maker. Check the height and weight limits too: the C2 Lite stops at 4 ft 8 in and 110 lb.

How fast do kids' electric scooters go?

Our picks top out between 7.5 and 12.4 mph. The Gotrax GKS Mini is the slowest at 7.5 mph, then the Hiboy Q2 Lite at 9 mph, the Segway C2 Lite at 9.9 mph, the Gyroor H40 at 10 mph and the Segway C2 Pro at 12.4 mph. The Q2 Lite also has 3 and 6 mph modes, and the C2 Lite a 7.5 mph Standard mode, which is where a new rider should start. All of them sit below California's 15 mph limit for motorized scooters.

How far does a kids' electric scooter go on a charge?

About 3.75 to 9.3 miles by the makers' own figures. Segway claims 5.6 miles for the C2 Lite at its 9.9 mph top speed with a 66 lb load (8.7 miles at 7.5 mph), and 9.3 miles for the C2 Pro with a 132 lb load. Hiboy claims 5 miles for the Q2 Lite and the Gotrax listing 3.75 miles for the GKS Mini; Gyroor gives the H40 40 to 60 minutes of riding instead. We give no range estimate of our own for kids' scooters, because our method assumes a 175 to 180 lb adult.

Does my child need a helmet on an electric scooter?

Yes, every ride, whichever scooter it is, from the 7.5 mph Gotrax GKS Mini to the 12.4 mph Segway C2 Pro. The CPSC estimates e-scooters sent 79,300 people to US emergency rooms in 2024, and only 18% of the injured riders it followed up were wearing a helmet. California requires a helmet for motorized scooter riders under 18 (Vehicle Code §21235). Choose a helmet that fits the child's head now, not one to grow into, and buckle it before every ride.

Is there a kids' electric scooter with a seat?

Yes: the Hiboy Q2 Lite, at $229.99 (as of Oct 22, 11:10 AM EDT, subject to change), is the only pick on this page with a seat. Hiboy rates it for ages 5 to 8 and up to 110 lb, with modes of 3, 6 and 9 mph, electronic plus drum braking, a rear brake light and a toy basket. It weighs 25.79 lb, the most of our four picks. Some states treat seated scooters differently from stand-up ones; New Jersey's legal e-scooter category, for example, covers stand-up models only.

Are kids' electric scooters safe to charge indoors?

Choose one with a UL 2272 claim, then charge it with care. Every pick here carries one: Segway states its C2 scooters are tested to UL 2272 by TÜV Rheinland, and the Hiboy Q2 Lite, Gotrax GKS Mini and Gyroor H40 listings state UL 2272. We could not verify any of them in a certifier's directory. Use the charger from the box, charge on a hard floor away from exits, and unplug when full. The Gyroor H40 shows why the charger matters: a 42 V charger is listed under its name, and its battery is 21.6 V.

Which popular kids' electric scooters did you leave out, and why?

The SIMATE S5 and the LINGTENG E8, two of the better-selling kids' scooters on Amazon (#18 and #23 in Electric Scooters on October 18, 2026), because neither listing states UL 2272. New York City requires UL 2272 for e-scooters sold there, and California requires UL 2272 battery testing for motorized scooters sold there. The LINGTENG E8 also describes only a rear foot brake. Our picks, such as the Segway C2 and Gyroor H40, all carry a UL 2272 claim and a hand or electronic brake.
