Our verdict
The Gotrax SD1 ($249.99 as of Oct 22, 11:10 AM EDT, subject to change) is a 15.5 mph adult scooter with a 250 W motor, a 36 V 5.2 Ah battery and a 12-mile claim, one of the slower adult scooters we cover. Gotrax does not list the SD1 on gotrax.com, so every figure is the Amazon listing's, and the near-identical GXL V2 that Gotrax does document is lighter.

Ranked #3 in Best Electric Scooters for Teens (2026).

At a glance
How we estimate range
We estimate range by dividing the battery's capacity in watt-hours by 22 to 27 watt-hours per mile. That band comes from the middle half of 32 full-speed range tests that eRideHero and RiderGuide published for 26 commuter scooters, adjusted to a rider of about 175 to 180 lb on city streets with stops and small hills. We have not ridden these scooters ourselves. Makers that publish their test conditions rate range for a 150 to 165 lb rider at about 9 to 10 mph on flat pavement at 77°F; in the full-speed tests, scooters covered a median 59% of the advertised range. You will get less in the cold, on steep hills or if you weigh more, and more if you ride slower.
The numbers
Gotrax SD1 Electric Scooter is a folding electric scooter that scores 6.4/10 on our editorial rubric, last verified on October 19, 2026. Amazon listed it at $250 as of October 22, 2026. Prices change often, so treat that as a snapshot. On Amazon it currently ranks #37 Best Seller in Electric Scooters. It pairs a 250 W motor and a 187 Wh battery, rated for a claimed range of up to 12 miles and a top speed of 15.5 mph. We estimate about 7 to 9 miles a charge for a 175 to 180 lb rider at full speed, because advertised ranges are measured with lighter riders at lower speeds. Its 15.5 mph top speed as shipped is above California's 15 mph scooter limit, so California riders must hold it to 15. It is under New Jersey's 19 mph line for a legal e-scooter. It is under New York's 20 mph e-scooter limit. Scooters are not e-bikes, so the US e-bike classes do not apply. The scooter weighs 33.3 lb and is rated for riders up to 220 lb. It rides on 8.5-inch mixed solid and air-filled tires, with an electronic brake (EABS) and a drum brake. The seller states UL 2272 certification (on the Amazon listing or the maker's own site); we could not verify it in the certifier's directory. It best suits adults under 220 lb who want a lower top speed for short trips.

- - About 7 to 9 miles of estimated range from a 187 Wh battery
Who is this for?
- Adults under 220 lb who want a lower top speed for short trips
- Older teens where state age rules allow a 15.5 mph scooter
What it is
The SD1 sat #36 in Amazon's Electric Scooters on October 18, 2026, in white, blue and orange. It is not on gotrax.com, and the listing names Zhejiang TaoTao Vehicles as the manufacturer. On paper it shares the Gotrax GXL V2's package: 250 W, 36 V 5.2 Ah, 15.5 mph, 8.5-inch wheels and a 220 lb rider limit. Yet the SD1's listing gives 33.3 lb to the GXL V2's 27 lb.

The facts that matter
The facts that matter
- Speed: 15.5 mph is half a mile an hour over California's 15 mph limit (Vehicle Code §22411) and well under the 20 mph line in New York's e-scooter definition (VTL §114-e). Scooters are not e-bikes, so the US e-bike classes do not apply. Pennsylvania bans e-scooters on public roads. The motor engages only after a kick to about 1.87 mph.
- Range: 12 miles claimed, with no test conditions. On about 187 Wh (our arithmetic) we estimate about 7 to 9 miles for a 175 to 180 lb rider at full speed. Our band runs low for 15.5 mph scooters, so expect a little more.
- Tires and brakes: the title says an air-filled front tire and a solid rear; the product table says solid. Braking is an electronic brake plus a drum; no suspension.
- Safety: The listing states UL 2272; we could not verify it in the certifier's directory. No lab is named. No CPSC recall found for the Gotrax SD1 as of October 2026.
Who it suits
Who it suits
Riders under 220 lb who want a lower top speed for short trips. If you are choosing between the two 15.5 mph Gotrax stand-up scooters we cover, the GXL V2 ($299 as of Oct 22, 11:10 AM EDT, subject to change) is the one Gotrax documents on its own site, with a manual, a stated 187.2 Wh battery and a 27 lb weight; it brakes with a rear disc where the SD1 pairs an electronic brake with a drum.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Gotrax SD1 the same scooter as the Gotrax GXL V2?
Not quite. On paper they share a 250 W motor, a 36 V 5.2 Ah battery, a 15.5 mph top speed, 8.5-inch wheels and a 220 lb limit. The GXL V2 is documented on gotrax.com at 27 lb with a rear disc brake; the SD1 is not on gotrax.com, and its listing gives 33.3 lb with an electronic brake plus a drum. Every SD1 figure is the listing's claim.
Can I ride the Gotrax SD1 in California?
On roads where scooters are allowed, yes, with conditions. California caps motorized scooters at 15 mph on the road (Vehicle Code §22411), half a mile an hour under the SD1's 15.5 mph top speed, and requires a driver's license or instruction permit, plus a helmet for riders under 18 (Vehicle Code §21235). Scooters are not e-bikes, so the e-bike classes do not apply. Check your city's rules too.
Is the Gotrax SD1 UL 2272 certified?
The listing states UL 2272; we could not verify it in the certifier's directory. No testing lab is named, and because Gotrax does not list the SD1 on its own site, there is no maker page to check the claim against. No CPSC recall found for the Gotrax SD1 as of October 2026.
Wear a helmet on every scooter ride. US emergency rooms saw an estimated 79,300 e-scooter injuries in 2024, and only 18% of injured riders in CPSC's data were wearing one.
