Our verdict

6.8
/ 10

The Gotrax GXL V2 ($299 as of Oct 22, 11:10 AM EDT, subject to change) suits teens and young adults with short, dry, flat trips who need a scooter light enough to carry: it weighs 27 lb and tops out at 15.5 mph on a 250 W motor. The catch is range. Its 187.2 Wh battery is small; Gotrax claims up to 12.5 miles, and we estimate about 7 to 9 at full speed for a 175 to 180 lb rider. It has one rear disc brake, no suspension and no stated water resistance, and it sat #57 in Amazon's Electric Scooters on October 18, 2026. Gotrax states UL 2272; we could not verify it in the certifier's directory.

How we estimate range

We estimate range by dividing the battery's capacity in watt-hours by 22 to 27 watt-hours per mile. That band comes from the middle half of 32 full-speed range tests that eRideHero and RiderGuide published for 26 commuter scooters, adjusted to a rider of about 175 to 180 lb on city streets with stops and small hills. We have not ridden these scooters ourselves. Makers that publish their test conditions rate range for a 150 to 165 lb rider at about 9 to 10 mph on flat pavement at 77°F; in the full-speed tests, scooters covered a median 59% of the advertised range. You will get less in the cold, on steep hills or if you weigh more, and more if you ride slower.

The numbers

Gotrax GXL V2 Electric Scooter is a folding electric scooter that scores 6.8/10 on our editorial rubric, last verified on October 19, 2026. Amazon listed it at $299 as of October 22, 2026. Prices change often, so treat that as a snapshot. On Amazon it currently ranks #63 Best Seller in Electric Scooters. It pairs a 250 W motor and a 187 Wh battery, rated for a claimed range of up to 12.5 miles and a top speed of 15.5 mph. We estimate about 7 to 9 miles a charge for a 175 to 180 lb rider at full speed, because advertised ranges are measured with lighter riders at lower speeds. Its 15.5 mph top speed as shipped is above California's 15 mph scooter limit, so California riders must hold it to 15. It is under New Jersey's 19 mph line for a legal e-scooter. It is under New York's 20 mph e-scooter limit. Scooters are not e-bikes, so the US e-bike classes do not apply. The scooter weighs 27 lb and is rated for riders up to 220 lb. It rides on 8.5-inch honeycomb solid tires, with a single rear disc brake. The seller states UL 2272 certification (on the Amazon listing or the maker's own site); we could not verify it in the certifier's directory. It best suits teens and young adults with trips of a few miles on flat, dry pavement.

Pros

  • + 27 lb: 8.5 lb lighter than the Hiboy S2 and 14.4 lb lighter than the Segway E2 Pro
  • + 15.5 mph top speed, a calmer pace for newer and younger riders
  • + Gotrax states its battery plainly: 36 V, 5.2 Ah, 187.2 Wh
  • + Simple to run: no app to pair and about a 4-hour charge

Cons

  • - Small battery: we estimate 7 to 9 miles at full speed against a 12.5-mile claim
  • - No IP rating, and the manual says not to ride in wet conditions
  • - No suspension, and the Amazon version rides on solid honeycomb tires
  • - One brake only, a rear disc, with no electronic brake listed

Who is this for?

  • Teens and young adults with trips of a few miles on flat, dry pavement
  • Riders who must carry a scooter up stairs or into a car trunk
  • California riders who want a top speed close to the state's 15 mph limit

What the Gotrax GXL V2 is, and what the listing gets wrong

The GXL V2 is Gotrax's basic folding commuter scooter: a 250 W front hub motor, a 36 V, 5.2 Ah battery (187.2 Wh, Gotrax's own figure), 8.5-inch tires, a 15.5 mph top speed, 27 lb of weight and a 220 lb limit, per Gotrax's product page and manual. It sat #57 in Amazon's Electric Scooters on October 18, 2026.

The tire type depends on which version you buy. Gotrax's page copy describes pneumatic tires and the manual's parts list includes a tire-gauge pipe, yet Gotrax's store also sells "Honeycomb Tires" colors, and the Amazon listing we link says honeycomb solid. Range is quoted three ways: up to 12.5 miles on the product page, 9 to 12 miles in the manual and 12 on Amazon. Amazon's product details add two errors, "Front Suspension" on a scooter that has none and a maximum age of 9 for an adult scooter, and the Amazon title promises cruise control, which Gotrax's own page does not mention.

Speed, power and where you can ride it

Gotrax lists a 250 W motor, and its summary tile calls that "250W Avg"; it publishes no peak figure, so we treat 250 W as the rated output. Top speed is 15.5 mph and there is no app. Its 15.5 mph top speed is half a mile an hour over California's 15 mph limit for motorized scooters (Vehicle Code §22411), so California riders must keep it at 15 mph or below, and well under New York's e-scooter definition (VTL §114-e: no more than 20 mph and under 100 lb). Scooters are not e-bikes, so the US e-bike classes do not apply. It also fits New Jersey's description of a legal e-scooter: stand-up, under 19 mph and no more than 750 W. For teens, age rules matter: California requires a driver's license or instruction permit (§21235) and a helmet under 18, and Illinois sets a minimum age of 18 for e-scooter riders until January 1, 2027, when SB 3484 lowers it to 16. Pennsylvania does not allow e-scooters on public roads at all.

Battery and real range

Gotrax states the pack plainly: 36 V, 5.2 Ah, 187.2 Wh. It publishes no range test conditions; the Amazon listing says only "under optimum conditions". We estimate range by dividing battery capacity by 22 to 27 watt-hours per mile, a band taken from published full-speed tests and adjusted to a 175 to 180 lb rider. For 187.2 Wh that is about 7 to 9 miles a charge, against Gotrax's 12.5. In those tests, scooters covered a median 59% of their advertised range, which would put the GXL V2 near 7 miles. The band can run low for 15.5 mph scooters, so a lighter rider on flat ground may see more. This is an estimate from the spec sheet; we have not ridden the GXL V2. Charging takes about 4 hours on the 42 V, 1.5 A charger, per the manual.

Ride, brakes and build

The Amazon version rides on 8.5-inch solid honeycomb tires with no suspension, so more of the road reaches the rider than on a scooter with air tires or springs. Stopping is a single rear disc brake on a hand lever, with no electronic brake listed. Gotrax gives no IP rating, and its manual says not to ride in wet conditions, so treat this as a dry-weather scooter. At 27 lb it is 8.5 lb lighter than the Hiboy S2 and 14.4 lb lighter than the Segway E2 Pro. The listing gives the folded size as 43.7 x 17.3 x 16.1 in; Gotrax's page gives none. The load limit is 220 lb. Gotrax states no maximum climb, and a 250 W motor is modest for hills. Lighting is an LED headlight. The warranty is one year.

Safety: UL 2272 and recalls

Gotrax states UL 2272; we could not verify it in the certifier's directory. Its product page says "Safety Certified - In accordance with UL 2272" and calls the battery "UL2272 Compliant", and the Amazon listing claims UL 2272 certification. That matters in New York City, where Local Law 39 has required UL 2272 for e-scooters sold there since September 16, 2023, and in California, where SB 1271 has required UL 2272 battery testing for motorized scooters sold there since January 1, 2026. Our electric scooter safety guide explains what the standard covers. No CPSC recall found for the Gotrax GXL V2 as of October 2026.

How it compares

Two scooters a GXL V2 shopper should look at first:

  • Segway E2 Pro ($499.99 as of Oct 22, 11:10 AM EDT, subject to change): the same 15.5 mph top speed as shipped, with more of everything else on paper. Segway lists a 350 W rated motor (750 W peak), a 275 Wh battery (we estimate 10 to 13 miles), 10-inch tubeless air tires, a front drum plus rear electronic brake, IPX4, a 265 lb limit and a two-year limited warranty. It weighs 41.4 lb, though.
  • Hiboy S2 ($299.98 as of Oct 22, 11:10 AM EDT, subject to change, against $299 (as of Oct 22, 11:10 AM EDT, subject to change) for the GXL V2): the faster, longer-range choice. Its 280.8 Wh battery gives an estimated 10 to 13 miles, it reaches 19 mph with a 13 mph mode for California, and it adds rear springs, a rear disc plus electronic brake and IPX4. It weighs 35.5 lb, 8.5 lb more than the GXL V2.

Who should buy it, and who should skip it

Buy the GXL V2 if you weigh well under 220 lb, your trips are a few miles on flat, dry pavement, and you need to carry the scooter up stairs or into a car. Its 15.5 mph top speed is a calmer start for a teen, where state law lets a teen ride. Skip it if you need more than about 7 miles at full speed, ride on rough streets, live somewhere it rains often, or want a second brake. If range matters more than weight, the Hiboy S2 above carries a bigger battery; for a 15.5 mph scooter with air tires and a two-year warranty, look at the Segway E2 Pro.

Frequently asked questions

How far does the Gotrax GXL V2 go on a charge?

About 7 to 9 miles at full speed for a 175 to 180 lb rider, by our estimate. Gotrax claims up to 12.5 miles on its product page and 9 to 12 in the manual, and publishes no test conditions. Our estimate divides the 187.2 Wh battery by 22 to 27 watt-hours per mile, a band from published full-speed tests. That band can run low for 15.5 mph scooters, so lighter riders on flat ground may see more.

Does the Gotrax GXL V2 have air tires or solid tires?

It depends on the version. The Amazon listing we link sells it with 8.5-inch solid honeycomb tires, which cannot go flat. Gotrax's own product copy describes pneumatic tires, its manual's parts list includes a tire-gauge pipe, and its store sells both "Honeycomb Tires" colors and others. Check the listing title or color name before you buy if the tire type matters to you.

How fast is the Gotrax GXL V2, and where can you ride it?

Gotrax rates it at 15.5 mph. That is half a mile an hour over California's 15 mph limit, so California riders must hold it to 15, and well under New York's 20 mph e-scooter definition. It fits New Jersey's description of a legal e-scooter (stand-up, under 19 mph, no more than 750 W). Pennsylvania does not allow e-scooters on public roads. Scooters are not e-bikes, so the e-bike classes do not apply; check your city's rules.

What is the weight limit, and how heavy is the GXL V2?

The limit is 220 lb and the scooter weighs 27 lb, 8.5 lb lighter than the Hiboy S2 and 14.4 lb lighter than the Segway E2 Pro. The Amazon listing gives the folded size as 43.7 x 17.3 x 16.1 in; Gotrax does not publish one. A heavier rider will get less range from the small 187.2 Wh battery than our 7 to 9 mile estimate.

Can you ride the Gotrax GXL V2 in the rain?

No. Gotrax states no IP rating for the GXL V2, and its manual says not to ride in wet conditions. Treat it as a dry-weather scooter. If you need to ride in rain, look at a scooter with a stated rating, such as the Hiboy S2 (IPX4) or the Segway E2 Pro (IPX4, with an IPX6 battery pack).

Is the Gotrax GXL V2 a good scooter for teens?

It is aimed at them: Gotrax describes it as a scooter for teens and young adults, and its 15.5 mph top speed and 27 lb weight suit a newer rider. Gotrax gives no numeric age range (Amazon's listed maximum age of 9 is a catalog error). State law decides who may ride: California requires a driver's license or instruction permit and a helmet under 18, and Illinois sets a minimum age of 18 until January 1, 2027, then 16 under SB 3484. A helmet is wise at any age.

Should I buy the Gotrax GXL V2 or the Hiboy S2?

The Hiboy S2 if you want range and speed; the GXL V2 if weight matters most. At our last check the Hiboy S2 cost $299.98 (as of Oct 22, 11:10 AM EDT, subject to change) and the GXL V2 $299 (as of Oct 22, 11:10 AM EDT, subject to change). The S2 has a 280.8 Wh battery (we estimate 10 to 13 miles, against 7 to 9), a 19 mph top speed, rear springs, a second brake and IPX4. The GXL V2 is 8.5 lb lighter at 27 lb and tops out at 15.5 mph.
