Our verdict

8.4
/ 10

The Segway Ninebot Max G2 ($699.99 as of Oct 22, 11:10 AM EDT, subject to change) is the pick for adults who want range first: a 551 Wh battery, 10-inch self-sealing tubeless tires and hydraulic front suspension, from a maker that publishes range at top speed. Segway claims 43 miles at a 9.9 mph average and 25 miles at 22 mph, both with a 165 lb rider; we estimate 20 to 25 miles at full speed for a 175 to 180 lb rider. It ships at 20 mph and reaches 22 mph through the app. The catch is its 53.5 lb weight. It is not part of the 2025 Max G30P recall.

How we estimate range

We estimate range by dividing the battery's capacity in watt-hours by 22 to 27 watt-hours per mile. That band comes from the middle half of 32 full-speed range tests that eRideHero and RiderGuide published for 26 commuter scooters, adjusted to a rider of about 175 to 180 lb on city streets with stops and small hills. We have not ridden these scooters ourselves. Makers that publish their test conditions rate range for a 150 to 165 lb rider at about 9 to 10 mph on flat pavement at 77°F; in the full-speed tests, scooters covered a median 59% of the advertised range. You will get less in the cold, on steep hills or if you weigh more, and more if you ride slower.

The numbers

Segway Ninebot Max G2 Electric Scooter is a folding electric scooter for riders 16 and up that scores 8.4/10 on our editorial rubric, last verified on October 19, 2026. Amazon listed it at $700 as of October 22, 2026. Prices change often, so treat that as a snapshot. On Amazon it currently ranks #32 Best Seller in Electric Scooters. It pairs a 450 W motor (1,000 W peak) and a 551 Wh battery, rated for a claimed range of up to 43 miles and a top speed of 20 mph. We estimate about 20 to 25 miles a charge for a 175 to 180 lb rider at full speed, because advertised ranges are measured with lighter riders at lower speeds. Its 20 mph top speed as shipped is above California's 15 mph scooter limit, so California riders must hold it to 15. New Jersey's legal e-scooter must be under 19 mph, so it is not a legal e-scooter there. It is right at New York's 20 mph e-scooter limit, which still qualifies. An app or settings unlock raises it to 22 mph, which is above New York's 20 mph e-scooter line. Scooters are not e-bikes, so the US e-bike classes do not apply. The scooter weighs 53.5 lb and is rated for riders up to 265 lb. It rides on 10-inch tubeless tires, with dual suspension and front drum and rear electronic brakes. The seller states UL 2272 certification (on the Amazon listing or the maker's own site); we could not verify it in the certifier's directory. It best suits adults commuting up to about 8 miles each way who want range first.

Pros

  • + 551 Wh battery: Segway rates 25 miles even at 22 mph
  • + 10-inch self-sealing tubeless tires with hydraulic front and spring rear suspension
  • + IPX5, traction control, Apple Find My and a remote anti-theft alarm
  • + 265 lb load limit and a 22% climb rating
  • + Not part of the 2025 Max G30P and G30LP recall; no CPSC recall found

Cons

  • - 53.5 lb to carry
  • - Front drum and rear electronic brakes, no disc
  • - The listing's 1000 W and 22 mph are the peak and the unlocked figures
  • - Unlocked to 22 mph, it is past New York's 20 mph e-scooter line

Who is this for?

  • Adults commuting up to about 8 miles each way who want range first
  • Riders up to 265 lb on rough or patched city streets
  • Wet-weather commuters who want IPX5 and self-sealing tires

What the Max G2 is, and what the listing gets wrong

The Segway Ninebot Max G2 (model 051501U) is Segway's long-range folding commuter: a rear hub motor rated at 450 W with a 1,000 W peak, a 551 Wh battery and a 265 lb load limit, per Segway's US spec page. The Amazon title leads with "Power by 1000W Motor" and "22MPH". Both are Segway's numbers at their most flattering: 1,000 W is the peak, against a 450 W continuous rating, and 22 mph needs a setting change in the app, because the scooter ships at 20 mph. The listing says charging takes 6 hours; Segway says 5. Segway's G2 spec table lists no brakes at all. Segway's own Max G3 FAQ calls the G2's setup a "drum and electronic brake combination", and the Amazon listing places the drum at the front and the electronic brake at the rear. The Max listing family, which also holds the G3 and G3 Plus, was #31 in Amazon's Electric Scooters on October 18, 2026.

Speed, power and where you can ride it

Segway rates the motor at 450 W continuous and 1,000 W peak. It ships at about 20 mph, and a setting in the Segway app raises that to about 22 mph. At the factory setting its 20 mph is at the 20 mph line in New York's e-scooter definition (VTL §114-e), and unlocked to 22 mph it goes past it; both speeds are above California's 15 mph limit for motorized scooters (Vehicle Code §22411), and scooters are not e-bikes, so the US e-bike classes do not apply. New Jersey's line for a legal e-scooter is under 19 mph and no more than 750 W (NJ chart). California also requires a driver's license or instruction permit, plus a helmet under 18 (§21235), and Pennsylvania does not allow e-scooters on public roads. In August 2026 New York City sent cease-and-desist orders to 42 online retailers, Amazon among them, over stand-up scooters that can exceed 20 mph; the outcome is not yet known.

Battery and real range

The battery is 36 V and 15.3 Ah, which Segway states as 551 Wh. Segway's 43-mile headline is a theoretical range, measured with a full battery, a 165 lb (75 kg) load, 77°F and a 9.9 mph average on pavement. Segway also prints range at top speed under the same conditions: 28 miles at 20 mph and 25 miles at 22 mph. We estimate 20 to 25 miles at full speed for a 175 to 180 lb rider on city streets with stops (551 Wh divided by 22 to 27 Wh per mile), so Segway's own 22 mph figure lands at the top of our band. Plan on 20 to 25 miles if you are heavier or ride in town; 43 is the number for a light rider cruising slowly on flat ground. Segway lists a full charge at about 5 hours from the built-in 121.8 W charger.

Ride, brakes and build

The Max G2 rides on 10-inch tubeless self-sealing tires, which Segway says seal punctures up to 4 mm, at 42 to 48 psi. Suspension is a hydraulic damper up front and dual springs at the rear. Braking is a front drum plus a rear electronic brake, with no disc, which is where the NIU KQi 300X and the Max G3 pull ahead with discs at both ends. It is rated IPX5. At 53.5 lb it is a two-handed lift, and it folds to 47.6 x 22.4 x 23.8 inches. Segway lists rider heights from 3 ft 11 in to 6 ft 6 in. You also get turn signals, a horn, traction control, a remote anti-theft alarm and Apple Find My; the listing adds an LED headlight, a brake light and cruise control, which Segway's page does not itemize.

Safety: UL 2272 and recalls

Segway states its scooters are tested to UL 2272 by TÜV Rheinland; we could not verify it in a certifier's directory. The statement appears on Segway's Max G2 page, and the Amazon listing repeats a UL 2272 claim. New York City requires UL 2272 for e-scooters sold there (Local Law 39); the standard covers electrical fire and shock risks and does not test the frame or folding stem. No CPSC recall found for the Segway Ninebot Max G2 as of October 2026. To be plain about the name: the Max G2 is a different model from the Max G30P and G30LP. Segway recalled about 220,000 of those scooters on March 20, 2025, after 68 reports of the folding mechanism failing and 20 injuries, and that recall does not cover the Max G2. G30P and G30LP owners can find the remedy on Segway's recall page and the CPSC notice.

How it compares

  • NIU KQi 300X: a bigger 608.4 Wh battery (we estimate 23 to 28 miles), front and rear disc brakes with regenerative braking, a hydraulic front fork and IP55, at 48.7 lb, about 5 lb lighter. NIU's US store lists 20 mph; the 23.6 mph on Amazon is NIU's non-US figure. The Max G2 keeps rear suspension and Segway's published top-speed range. Our Max G2 vs KQi 300X comparison goes through the rest.
  • Segway Ninebot Max G3: front and rear disc brakes, dual hydraulic suspension, 11-inch tires, IPX6, a 286 lb limit and a 28 mph unlock, for 0.7 lb more and only 46 Wh more battery. Segway's US store lists the G3 as end of life, so the G2 is the current model of the two.
  • Segway Ninebot F3 ($849.99 as of Oct 22, 11:10 AM EDT, subject to change): 11.2 lb lighter at 42.3 lb, with a front disc instead of a drum and IPX6, but a smaller 477 Wh battery (we estimate 18 to 22 miles) and an 8-hour charge.
  • Segway ZT3 Pro ($799.99 as of Oct 22, 11:10 AM EDT, subject to change): the all-terrain Segway, with a 1,600 W peak motor, 11-inch off-road tires and disc brakes at both ends. It ships at 24.9 mph, above New York's 20 mph line, and weighs 65.5 lb.

Who should buy it, and who should skip it

Buy the Max G2 if you are 16 or older, weigh up to 265 lb with your bag, and ride up to about 8 miles each way on city streets, which leaves a margin inside our 20 to 25 mile estimate. The self-sealing tires and suspension suit rough pavement, and IPX5 suits wet commutes. Skip it if you carry the scooter up stairs (53.5 lb), if you want disc brakes (look at the NIU KQi 300X or the Max G3), or if your trips are short enough for a lighter scooter such as the Segway Ninebot E3 Pro. Our guide to the best electric scooters for adults sets it against the rest.

Frequently asked questions

How far can the Segway Max G2 really go?

Segway's headline is 43 miles at a 9.9 mph average with a 165 lb rider at 77°F, and it rates 28 miles at 20 mph and 25 miles at 22 mph under the same conditions. We estimate 20 to 25 miles at full speed for a 175 to 180 lb rider on city streets with stops (551 Wh divided by 22 to 27 Wh per mile). Cold weather, hills and a heavier load cut range further.

Is the Max G2 part of the Segway recall?

No. The March 2025 recall covered about 220,000 Max G30P and G30LP scooters, whose folding mechanism could fail; it does not cover the Max G2. No CPSC recall found for the Segway Ninebot Max G2 as of October 2026. If you own a G30P or G30LP, Segway's recall page and the CPSC notice explain the remedy.

What is the Max G2's top speed?

About 20 mph as shipped, and about 22 mph once you enable the higher speed setting in the Segway app. The Amazon title quotes 22 mph without saying it needs the app. At 20 mph the G2 sits at the line in New York's e-scooter definition; California limits motorized scooters to 15 mph, whatever they can reach. Scooters are not e-bikes, so the e-bike classes do not apply.

Does the Max G2 have disc brakes?

No. Segway's own Max G3 FAQ calls the G2's brakes a drum and electronic brake combination, and the Amazon listing puts the drum at the front and the electronic brake at the rear; the G2 spec table itself lists no brakes. If you want discs, the Max G3 has them front and rear, and the NIU KQi 300X pairs front and rear discs with regenerative braking.

Is the Max G2 too heavy to carry?

It weighs 53.5 lb and folds to 47.6 x 22.4 x 23.8 inches, so a flight of stairs is a two-handed job. If you carry a scooter daily, Segway's E3 Pro (40.1 lb) and E2 Pro (41.4 lb) are lighter, with smaller 368 Wh and 275 Wh batteries. The trade is range: we estimate 14 to 17 miles for the E3 Pro against 20 to 25 for the G2.

How long does the Max G2 take to charge?

About 5 hours by Segway's figure, from a 121.8 W charger built into the scooter, so there is no separate charging brick to carry. The Amazon listing says 6 hours. Either way, an overnight charge refills the 551 Wh battery, and a charge during a workday is enough to refill it for the ride home.

Segway Max G2 or NIU KQi 300X?

Choose the Max G2 for rear suspension and Segway's published top-speed range figures. Choose the NIU KQi 300X for a bigger 608.4 Wh battery, front and rear disc brakes and a lighter 48.7 lb frame. Both carry riders up to 265 lb, and both ship at 20 mph in the US; the Max G2 reaches about 22 mph with Segway's app. Our side-by-side comparison of the two covers the rest.
