Our verdict
The Gotrax A5 ($379.99 as of Oct 22, 11:10 AM EDT, subject to change) is a sit-down scooter built around the seat: 12-inch air-filled tires, rear shocks, drum brakes front and rear, a rear basket rated for 40 lb and a 15.5 mph top speed, from a US brand with a support line. The catches: it weighs 50.7 lb, carries only 220 lb, and Gotrax publishes no battery size, so its 15.5-mile range claim cannot be checked. It is sold on Amazon, not on gotrax.com.

The numbers
Gotrax A5 Electric Scooter with Seat is a folding, seated electric scooter that scores 7.0/10 on our editorial rubric, last verified on October 19, 2026. Amazon listed it at $380 as of October 22, 2026. Prices change often, so treat that as a snapshot. On Amazon it currently ranks #41 Best Seller in Electric Scooters. It pairs a 400 W motor (550 W peak), rated for a claimed range of up to 15.5 miles and a top speed of 15.5 mph. Its 15.5 mph top speed as shipped is above California's 15 mph scooter limit, so California riders must hold it to 15. New Jersey's legal e-scooter is a stand-up scooter, so a seated model is not one there. It is under New York's 20 mph e-scooter limit. Scooters are not e-bikes, so the US e-bike classes do not apply. The scooter weighs 50.7 lb and is rated for riders up to 220 lb. It rides on 12-inch air-filled tires, with rear suspension and front and rear drum brakes. The seller states UL 2272 certification (on the Amazon listing or the maker's own site); we could not verify it in the certifier's directory. It best suits riders who want to sit for the whole trip on ordinary streets.
Pros
- + 12-inch air-filled tires and rear dual shocks for a soft ride
- + Rear basket for 40 lb or more, plus an 11 lb handlebar hook
- + Drum brakes front and rear
- + 15.5 mph, close to California's 15 mph limit
- + Gotrax customer support and a 365-day parts warranty
Cons
- - No battery size published, so the 15.5-mile claim cannot be checked
- - 50.7 lb, too heavy to carry
- - 220 lb rider limit, lower than most seated scooters we cover
- - Not on gotrax.com, and its Amazon ratings are shared with two other models
Who is this for?
- Riders who want to sit for the whole trip on ordinary streets
- Shopping runs and errands, thanks to the basket and hook
- Riders under 220 lb who park at ground level
What the Gotrax A5 is
The A5 is a seated electric scooter in the style of a small moped: a steel frame, a padded seat, 12-inch pneumatic tires, a wide deck with a fold-down footrest, a rear basket Gotrax rates for 40 lb or more and a hook on the handlebar for 11 lb of bags. You can still stand on the deck. Gotrax sells it on Amazon, but not on gotrax.com, which lists only A5 spare parts; Amazon names Zhejiang TaoTao Vehicles as the manufacturer. Gotrax's own store sells a different seated line-up, the A7, Flex Voyager and A3 Aero.
On Amazon the A5 shares one listing family with the bigger A7 and the 14-inch FLEX ULTRA. All three show the same 4.3 stars from 1,380 ratings and the same #33 placement in Electric Scooters (October 19, 2026), so the ratings are not the A5's alone. The A5 options are Light Black and Light White.

Speed, power and where you can ride it
Speed, power and where you can ride it
The listing gives three motor figures: "400W Rated" in the title, a 550 W peak in a bullet and 500 W peak power in a feature field. Top speed is 15.5 mph on a twist throttle, with an LED display for battery level. Its 15.5 mph top speed is half a mile an hour over California's 15 mph limit for motorized scooters (Vehicle Code §22411), so California riders must hold it to 15; California's definition covers a scooter with a floorboard to stand on or a seat and footrests in its place (§407.5). It is well under New York's 20 mph line, and New York's e-scooter definition counts a scooter with a seat (VTL §114-e). New Jersey's legal e-scooter is a stand-up scooter, so a seated model is not one there. Scooters are not e-bikes, so the US e-bike classes do not apply, and Pennsylvania does not allow e-scooters on public roads.
Battery and real range
Battery and real range
Gotrax gives no battery voltage, amp-hours or watt-hours for the A5, so we cannot make our usual estimate from watt-hours. The claim is 15.5 miles in the title and table and 16 in a bullet, with a note that range varies with rider weight and weather. In published full-speed tests, scooters covered a median 59% of their advertised range, which on a 15.5-mile claim points to roughly 9 miles for an average adult; the A5's lower top speed may help it do better than that. Charging takes about 5 hours.
Ride, brakes and build
Ride, brakes and build
This is where the A5 earns its price. The 12-inch air-filled tires and rear dual shocks soak up far more than the 8.5-inch solid tires on budget seated scooters, and a bullet describes the suspension as dual; the product table says rear only. Braking is a drum at each wheel, with no disc and no electronic brake listed. There is a headlight and a rear brake light. No water (IP) rating is stated.
The cost is weight and capacity. At 50.7 lb it is a scooter you park, not one you carry; the handlebar folds for storage. The rider limit is 220 lb, lower than the 265 lb of the budget seated picks. Gotrax gives a 365-day parts warranty. On age, the listing says "Adults & Teens" and "easy for up to 13+ year olds", while Amazon's catalog lists a maximum age of 12 and files it under "Adult Electric Bicycles"; treat it as an adult and older-teen scooter, and check your state's age rules.
Safety: UL 2272 and recalls
Safety: UL 2272 and recalls
The listing states UL 2272; we could not verify it in the certifier's directory. The bullet says "This seated escooter has passed UL2272 Certified", with no lab named, and because the A5 is not on gotrax.com there is no maker page to check it against. That matters in New York City, where Local Law 39 requires e-scooters sold there to be certified to UL 2272, and in California, which has required UL 2272 battery testing for motorized scooters sold there since January 1, 2026. No CPSC recall found for the Gotrax A5 as of October 2026. Our electric scooter safety guide covers what to check.
How it compares
How it compares
- Gotrax FLEX ULTRA ($549.99 as of Oct 22, 11:10 AM EDT, subject to change): the bigger seated Gotrax in the same Amazon family, with 14-inch air tires, suspension at both ends, a 500 W motor, 20 mph and a stated 460.8 Wh battery (we estimate 17 to 21 miles), at 60.4 lb and a 264 lb limit.
- Qlaway K078L ($174.99 as of Oct 22, 11:10 AM EDT, subject to change): a light seated scooter at 28 to 33.5 lb, with a 288.6 Wh battery (we estimate 11 to 13 miles) and a seat that doubles as a storage box, but 8.5-inch solid tires and no suspension.
Who should buy it, and who should skip it
Who should buy it, and who should skip it
Buy the A5 if you want to sit for the whole ride, your trips are a few miles on ordinary streets, you weigh under 220 lb, and you can park it at ground level. Its air tires, rear shocks and basket make it the most comfortable everyday seated scooter in our seat guide for the money. Skip it if you weigh more than 220 lb, need to carry it upstairs, want a known battery size, or live in New Jersey and want a legal e-scooter there. Our best electric scooters with a seat guide ranks it against the other seated picks.

Frequently asked questions
How far does the Gotrax A5 go on a charge?
Gotrax claims 15.5 miles (16 in one bullet) and publishes no battery size, so we cannot estimate it from watt-hours. In published full-speed tests, scooters covered a median 59% of their advertised range, which on a 15.5-mile claim points to roughly 9 miles for an average adult; its 15.5 mph top speed may help it do better. Cold weather, hills and a heavier rider shrink it.
Is the Gotrax A5 on the Gotrax website?
No. On October 19, 2026 gotrax.com listed only A5 spare parts; its own seated line-up is the A7, Flex Voyager and A3 Aero. The A5 is sold on Amazon, which names Zhejiang TaoTao Vehicles as the manufacturer. The A3 Aero on gotrax.com is a different 12-inch scooter, so do not mix up their specs.
How much weight can the Gotrax A5 carry?
Riders up to 220 lb, plus 40 lb or more in the rear basket and 11 lb on the handlebar hook, per the listing. The scooter itself weighs 50.7 lb. If you weigh more than 220 lb, the Gotrax FLEX ULTRA (264 lb) or the Qlaway K078L (265 lb) are rated higher.
How fast is the Gotrax A5, and where can I ride it?
15.5 mph. That is half a mile an hour over California's 15 mph limit, so California riders must hold it to 15, and well under New York's 20 mph line; both states' definitions allow a seat. New Jersey's legal e-scooter is stand-up only, so a seated model is not one there, and Pennsylvania does not allow e-scooters on public roads. Scooters are not e-bikes, so the e-bike classes do not apply.
Gotrax A5 or Gotrax FLEX ULTRA?
The A5 if 15.5 mph and short trips suit you; the FLEX ULTRA if you want more range and a softer ride. The FLEX ULTRA has 14-inch tires, suspension at both ends, a 500 W motor, 20 mph and a stated 460.8 Wh battery (we estimate 17 to 21 miles), and carries 264 lb, but weighs 60.4 lb against 50.7. The A5 publishes no battery size.
Is the Gotrax A5 UL 2272 certified?
The listing states UL 2272; we could not verify it in the certifier's directory. The bullet reads "This seated escooter has passed UL2272 Certified", with no lab named, and there is no A5 page on gotrax.com to check it against. No CPSC recall found for the Gotrax A5 as of October 2026.
Wear a helmet on every scooter ride. US emergency rooms saw an estimated 79,300 e-scooter injuries in 2024, and only 18% of injured riders in CPSC's data were wearing one.
