What stands out about this bike

Most sub-$1,500 folding fat-tire e-bikes feel like a parts catalog stitched together — Mars 2.0 is the rare one that feels like a designed product. The frame welds are clean, the 5-inch coloured display is genuinely useful (not a 90s LCD), and the integrated tail-light + brake light is the kind of detail you usually don't see until $1,500+.

Power and battery

750W rear hub is generous for the price tier — equivalent torque to bikes that cost $200 more. The 624 Wh battery (48V × 13Ah) sits inside the seat tube, so there's no awkward external pack. Heybike claims up to 70 mi range; owner reports cluster at 28-35 mi at PAS 3 with occasional throttle, so a 50-mile realistic estimate is what we plan around. Cold weather under 40°F drops another 15%. With Class 3 unlocked the throttle tops out near 20 mph and pedal-assist reaches 28 mph — verify your state allows Class 3 before relying on the top speed.

Folding and transport

Folded size (37.4" × 21.7" × 28") is comparable to the Lectric XP 4 but the bike is 13 lb heavier (77 lb total). It fits in a sedan trunk if you lay it down and use a folding-bike bag (the seats around it can stay clean). Where this bike actually wins: RV exterior racks, where the fat tires double as cushion against road vibration.

Build quality and what gives

Mechanical disc brakes (not hydraulic) — the most common Heybike compromise at this tier. They work fine for normal riding but fade on long hilly descents. Pedal assist is cadence-sensor (not torque), so power ramps in steps rather than smoothly with effort — noticeable on smooth roads, less obvious on the rough terrain these tires were built for. The IP54 rating means light rain is fine; don't pressure-wash it.

Who should buy it (and who should skip)

Buy this if you want fat tires + folding + Class 3 pedal-assist for around $1,500. Skip this if you mostly ride pavement and prefer a smoother torque-sensor pedal feel — the Lectric XP 4 ($999) is the better road-commuter at a lower price. Skip this if you need a real cargo bike — Mars 2.0 has a rear rack but it's not Tern-GSD-rated for passengers.
